Robotic sailing has the potential to become a cost efficient and environmentally friendly alternative for marine research, surveillance and certain transports. Åland Sailing Robots is a project initiated in 2013 at Åland University of Applied Sciences. The project’s goal is to build the first sailing robot to autonomously cross the Atlantic Ocean, inspired by the Microtransat Challenge. Through this project we will contribute to expanding the knowledge on autonomous vessels and green technology. The project is interdisciplinary and especially connects the fields of Marine Technology, Navigation, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology.
